Symbolic Monarch Migration

Unite your students with youth across North America through an exchange of paper butterflies and letters! Each fall, groups in the USA and Canada create beautiful Ambassador Folders to send to students near the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, and life-sized paper butterflies. The Ambassador Folder created by the group becomes the gift to the Mexican student who receives it. Each spring, they receive different life-sized butterflies and a letter from a student in Mexico.

This is the 31st annual Symbolic Monarch Migration! Families, homeschools, zoos, aquariums, nature centers, libraries, youth groups, and classrooms are all welcome.

Learn more about the Symbolic Migration Process

In this short video, Susan Meyers will explain the process of creating and mailing your Ambassador Folder and contents. In fall 2025, over 27,000 youth in the U.S. and Canada participated in the Symbolic Monarch Migration project. Over 1,200 Ambassador Folders traveled to Mexico and became a gift for the student who received it. Life-sized butterflies created in the fall returned to participating group along with a letter from a Mexican student.

These symbolic butterflies build bridges of communication between students in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. United by the monarch butterfly, children across North America learn authentic lessons of conservation, cooperation, and ambassadorship.
