ABOUT THIS COURSE

The Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (MLMP) is a long-running community science program that helps track monarch breeding activity by collecting standardized data on monarch eggs, larvae, and milkweed plants. In this instructor-supported, self-paced course, you’ll learn how to participate in MLMP while building the skills and confidence needed to contribute high-quality data that support monarch conservation and research in the western United States.

Designed with working adults in mind, this four-week training blends flexible, self-paced learning with  optional live office hours. You’ll move through approximately three hours of on-demand content while engaging with instructors and fellow participants through discussion boards and live Zoom sessions. See below for more details.

During the first two weeks, you’ll be introduced to monarch biology, the goals and methods of MLMP, and how to describe and prepare a monitoring site. You’ll create an MLMP account and complete a site description using your own site or provided examples if you don’t yet have a monitoring location. In the second half of the course, you’ll dive into MLMP monitoring activities, data collection using detail data sheets, and wrap up with a knowledge check to reinforce key concepts.

Two live, one-hour sessions (March 11 and March 25, 6:00–7:00 pm CT) will provide opportunities to ask questions, review data sheets, and connect directly with MLMP experts. Weekly discussion prompts encourage reflection, peer learning, and community building.

  • Dates: March 2-27, 2026 (4 weeks)
    • Optional Live Sessions: March 11 and 25 (6:00-7:00pm CT)

  • After attending these sessions, participants have access to all recorded sessions.
  • Clock hours (CEUs) can be given to educators for teacher license renewal, Master Gardeners/Naturalists looking for continuing education hours, and anyone else looking for a certificate. Just email us!

Testimonials

“Very thorough training. I feel ready to monitor and identify different stages of monarch larvae.”

-Peggy, CA

“The self-paced online training is a great alternative for people who may not be able to attend one of the live regional webinars or an in-person training. Important topics are shown in separate videos that are thorough but not too long. The balance is just right for learning about monarch biology, conservation, specific monitoring protocols, and where/how to find more information.”

-Andrea, VA

“Great training for anyone who loves nature and wants to get involved in real life citizen science. The information in the course is excellent and makes you excited to get out and start monitoring.”

-Charles, TX
